A film about the big businesses behind the food we eat.

Featuring special guests from the Bushwick Farmers’ Market, staff from Councilwoman Diana Reyna’s office, and music by Free Advice. Come mingle with neighbors, have a beer, and watch a really good movie about a really scary industry.

When: February 23, at 7:00pm (doors open at 7, movie starts at 8:00)

Where: Tandem, 236 Troutman St.

Popcorn, Snacks and $3 beer specials.

Compost Sifter/Tumbler

Made of bike rims, scrap steel, hardware cloth, rollerblades, a shipping palette, and a few screws, this sifter will soon be separating soil at the Secret Garden in Bushwick.

WFMU live radio broadcast: “Ridin’ Dirty with Trent and Marty McSorley”

We rode, for about a mile. We gambled with the 30%-50% chance of rain and lost. So, it turned out not (yet) to be the world’s first mobile, bike-and-solar-powered live radio broadcast, but we went ahead with an amazing bike-themed show after some pizza, beer, and vodka-watermelon deliciousness at 3rd Ward.

But don’t fret. “I didn’t get to join the caravan of cyclists up the waterfront,” you say. “I wanted to see Seabeast live!” you continue, lips quivering. Not to worry. Plans are already in the making for a future trek. The rain didn’t wash away our hopes for live mobile radio.

Thanks again to all that stuck with us (and especially those who went ahead of us to the park) and pulled together for a splendid show. Stay tuned for phase two.

WFMU Live Bike-Trailer Broadcast Test Run

Vanessa and Travis of the Band of Bicycles ran a test of the proposed route for the upcoming live radio show with Trent Wolbe of WFMU. The signal is clear, the road is passable, and nearly everyone we passed gave a smile, cheer, or snapped a photo as we sipped seltzer in style.

As the Director of Heavy Lifting of the Band of Bicycles, I often find myself carrying quite a load or helping others find the optimal method for hauling what’s in need of hauling. I get a lot of practice with all of the wonderful discarded, dismissed, and underappreciated items that show up on the side of New York City streets. One of my recent finds and hauls was featured in the Xtracycle Gallery blog.

I write to you today amid whistling wind and soggy skies, watching the heart-shaped leaves of morning glories flutter. That can only mean one thing: it’s June! And that means it’s time for rides, adventure, exploration, and pedal-powered excitement.

Here’s what we have in store for you in the next few days:

Thursday, June 18^th, 2009: Bike Repair workshop at the B& St&, our community bike space at 3^rd Ward (195 Morgan Ave, Brooklyn, www.3rdward.com) 5pm-8pm, followed by a group ride out the Greenpoint Rooftop Farm in-you guessed it-Greenpoint! Bring your raincoats and galoshes!
Saturday, June 20^th, 2009: check out the film Pirates of the Broadway in the Bicycle Film Festival at 3pm, starring our very own Gaylen Hamilton. (http://bicyclefilmfestival.com/), then head over to Sackett and Henry in Brooklyn for a goat spit extravaganza in support of the Greenhorns, a documentary about young farmers (www.thegreenhorns.net). The Band of Bicycles will perform at 6pm. Reverend Billy and the Church of Life After Shopping at 7pm. Bring your dancing shoes and eating pants.
Sunday, June 21^st, 2009: Make Music New York! Join us at the Woodbine Block Association Community Garden for pedal-powered tunes, and bike-blended tastiness. Enjoy music from DJ Poncho, Seabeast, Lina Villegas, Band of Bicycles, and a Summer Solstice Garden Blessing from the Rev. Goddess Charmaine. 2-8pm. 146 Woodbine street Central/Evergreen. Monday, June 22^nd, 2009: Join us for Zev Dean’s MAW, an Unveiling of Otherworldly Curiosities, at Glasslands Gallery.
