WFMU Live Bike-Trailer Broadcast Test Run

Vanessa and Travis of the Band of Bicycles ran a test of the proposed route for the upcoming live radio show with Trent Wolbe of WFMU. The signal is clear, the road is passable, and nearly everyone we passed gave a smile, cheer, or snapped a photo as we sipped seltzer in style.

B& o’B at 3rd Ward’s Bluegrass BBQ

The Band of Bicycles rocked some Bike-Blended Blueberry Bluegrass Lemonade at 3rd Ward’s Bluegrass BBQ on August 23rd to the delight of bluegrass aficionados, 3rd Ward first-time visitors, and rain-soaked regular patrons. We now have a handful of mouth harp experts in the B&. Some dudes rocked out with the tambourine and bell on my Radish. Shira tried to Capoeira my camera. (Yes, I just used it as a verb).

Our very own Lopi LaRoe was recently featured in the Xtracycle Gallery for one of her many feats of towing prowess with her Radish. Next she will be towing a small boat filled with radishes… stay tuned.

Governors Island Composting and Camping Excursion

Earth Matter, Inc. launched its composting program on Governors Island in collaboration with the Added Value farm and Band of Bicycles during City of Water Day, July 18th, 2009. We collected and carted food scraps to the farm by Xtracycle, and surfed the back of the Radishes on the car-free island on the return journey. After a long day of compost collection, we graced the far fields of the island with our joyful camp, but not before busting some moves at the Water Taxi Beach and smuggling 20+ people from Kaleidoscope in to join our slumber party.

Band of Bicycles moseyed on over to Brooklyn Bike Shop (1342A De Kalb) last Thursday after some food, tunes, and system tests at our 3rd Ward home base. Seabeast rocked the shop with accompaniment from Baby Willis, Aubrey sang about how she really felt about her last relationship, followed by an aria from Natalya.

Band of Bicycles’ first community bike ride to Greenpoint Rooftop Farm

The Band of Bicycles braved the elements last Thursday for our first bike repair night at 3rd Ward, followed by a group ride out to the Rooftop Farm in Greenpoint. We witnessed rows upon rows of flourishing flora against a glowing pre-apocalyptic skyline, cared for by Ben and Annie by day, and a stoic wooden giraffe by night.

Mid-June Pedal-Powered Adventure!

Greetings bicycle-machine riding lovelies,

I write to you today amid whistling wind and soggy skies, watching the heart-shaped leaves of morning glories flutter. That can only mean one thing: it’s June! And that means it’s time for rides, adventure, exploration, and pedal-powered excitement.

Here’s what we have in store for you in the next few days:

Thursday, June 18^th, 2009: Bike Repair workshop at the B& St&, our community bike space at 3^rd Ward (195 Morgan Ave, Brooklyn, www.3rdward.com) 5pm-8pm, followed by a group ride out the Greenpoint Rooftop Farm in-you guessed it-Greenpoint! Bring your raincoats and galoshes!
Saturday, June 20^th, 2009: check out the film Pirates of the Broadway in the Bicycle Film Festival at 3pm, starring our very own Gaylen Hamilton. (http://bicyclefilmfestival.com/), then head over to Sackett and Henry in Brooklyn for a goat spit extravaganza in support of the Greenhorns, a documentary about young farmers (www.thegreenhorns.net). The Band of Bicycles will perform at 6pm. Reverend Billy and the Church of Life After Shopping at 7pm. Bring your dancing shoes and eating pants.
Sunday, June 21^st, 2009: Make Music New York! Join us at the Woodbine Block Association Community Garden for pedal-powered tunes, and bike-blended tastiness. Enjoy music from DJ Poncho, Seabeast, Lina Villegas, Band of Bicycles, and a Summer Solstice Garden Blessing from the Rev. Goddess Charmaine. 2-8pm. 146 Woodbine street Central/Evergreen. Free admission. www.woodbinegarden.org.
Monday, June 22^nd, 2009: Join us for Zev Dean’s MAW, an Unveiling of Otherworldly Curiosities, at Glasslands Gallery. The Band of Bicycles’ Lemonade Stand Band will be there along with Madame Blair Ward, Lord Whimsy, Ancestral Diet, Lady Circus, Wai Charo & Forest City. http://www.glasslands.com/ 7pm. $6.
