The B& broke into Oh Ten in collaboration with Dara, Josh, and Olivia from the Spectres of Liberty project.  After just over a week of intensive planning, building models, grinding, welding, chopping, tweaking, and singing, a prototype is born.  She’s a beautiful baby zoetrope, measuring 8 feet across and standing around 6 1/2 feet up on her legs.  She’ll be joined by a couple more brothers or sisters soon for a public art piece in Syracuse, NY.

We rode, for about a mile.  We gambled with the 30%-50% chance of rain and lost.  So, it turned out not (yet) to be the world’s first mobile, bike-and-solar-powered live radio broadcast, but we went ahead with an amazing bike-themed show after some pizza, beer, and vodka-watermelon deliciousness at 3rd Ward.

But don’t fret.  “I didn’t get to join the caravan of cyclists up the waterfront,” you say.  “I wanted to see Seabeast live!” you continue, lips quivering.  Not to worry. Plans are already in the making for a future trek.  The rain didn’t wash away our hopes for live mobile radio.

Thanks again to all that stuck with us (and especially those who went ahead of us to the park) and pulled together for a splendid show. Stay tuned for phase two.

Join us for an afternoon of Bluegrass music and BBQ!  Featuring Chef Jeremy Spector and local Bluegrass bands Melody Allegra & Friends, The Strung Out String Band, Jefferson Hamer & Stephanie Coleman and Free Advice.  Bluegrass musicians come armed and ready to play!  At 8 p we’ll turn the stage over to an open blugrass jam hosted by Melody Allegra.  We’ll also have apple bobbing, horseshoes and everybody’s favorite – the photobooth!  Plus, our friends from the Band of Bicycles will be on hand with bike blended libations and song.

...and a small giraffe shall lead the way.

I write to you today amid whistling wind and soggy skies, watching the heart-shaped leaves of morning glories flutter.  That can only mean one thing: it’s June!  And that means it’s time for rides, adventure, exploration, and pedal-powered excitement.

Here’s what we have in store for you in the next few days:

  • Thursday, June 18th, 2009: Bike Repair workshop at the B& St&, our community bike space at 3rd Ward (195 Morgan Ave, Brooklyn, www.3rdward.com) 5pm-8pm, followed by a group ride out the Greenpoint Rooftop Farm in-you guessed it-Greenpoint!  Bring your raincoats and galoshes!
  • Saturday, June 20th, 2009: check out the film Pirates of the Broadway in the Bicycle Film Festival at 3pm, starring our very own Gaylen Hamilton. (http://bicyclefilmfestival.com/), then head over to Sackett and Henry in Brooklyn for a goat spit extravaganza in support of the Greenhorns, a documentary about young farmers (www.thegreenhorns.net).  The Band of Bicycles will perform at 6pm.  Reverend Billy and the Church of Life After Shopping at 7pm. Bring your dancing shoes and eating pants.
  • Sunday, June 21st, 2009: Make Music New York!  Join us at the Woodbine Block Association Community Garden for pedal-powered tunes, and bike-blended tastiness. Enjoy music from DJ Poncho, Seabeast, Lina Villegas, Band of Bicycles, and a Summer Solstice Garden Blessing from the Rev. Goddess Charmaine.   2-8pm. 146 Woodbine street Central/Evergreen.  Free admission.  www.woodbinegarden.org.
  • Monday, June 22nd, 2009: Join us for Zev Dean’s MAW, an Unveiling of Otherworldly Curiosities, at Glasslands Gallery.  The Band of Bicycles’ Lemonade Stand Band will be there along with Madame Blair Ward, Lord Whimsy, Ancestral Diet, Lady Circus, Wai Charo & Forest City.  http://www.glasslands.com/ 7pm. $6.
